Why bother with homemade air fresheners? Why not just visit the air freshener aisle at the grocery store, you ask??
I used to wonder the same thing… And there was a period of time when I was like a little kid in a candy store when I’d visit the air freshener aisle at the grocery store.
I’d rub my hands together in delight as I perused the hundreds of brightly-colored packages begging for me to place them in my cart.
The scents always sounded so tantalizing… Island Delight, Fresh Lavender, Boysenberry Splash…
I’d excitedly pick a few different options and hurry home to try them out in my little farmhouse…
And I was disappointed every time.
Why DIY Air Freshener Sprays are Better Than Store-bought:
When I used to purchase air freshener sprays at the store, not only did the scents never quite match their descriptions, but they smelled fake and overly perfumey… And they gave me an instant headache.
The final straw was when I found out that many commonly available air fresheners have been shown to contain harmful chemicals. At that point, I just decided to just have a boring smelling house forever…
Thankfully, I didn’t have to suffer for long.
Essential oils are my favorite trick for freshening up my home, and I most commonly use them in a diffuser. However, sometimes I’ve found I need a blast of freshness FAST and that’s when I mix up one of these homemade air freshener recipes which:
- Are all-natural and allow you to experience the health benefits of essential oils at the same time.
- Don’t contain harmful substances like many store-bought sprays.
- Are extremely affordable because they use simple ingredients you have in your cabinets.
Supplies for Making Homemade Air Fresheners
Water
I use tap water, but distilled is fine, too.
Essential Oils
These are the powerhouse in the following recipes. Not only do they allow you to acheive the scents you want, they also help to cleanse the air. I’ll give you my favorite scent combinations below, but you can definitely mix and match. This the brand of essential oils I’ve used exclusively for 8 years.
Alcohol
I use a bit of vodka or rubbing alcohol to my sprays because they help the essential oils and water to mix more thoroughly, and helps the homemade air freshener to dry faster. You could omit it if you like, but I really think it results in a better end product. My favorite tip? If you don’t keep a lot of alcohol in your home, simply use vanilla extract. It adds extra punch to the recipe, and you can even make real homemade vanilla extract yourself.
Spray Bottle
All of my air freshener recipes will fill an 8oz spray bottle. However, if you want to go gangbusters, don’t hesitate to double or triple the recipe. I adore these continuous sprayers— they are fun to use and produce a fine mist. However, a simple glass spray bottle like this one works as well and I like to keep them on hand for these recipes as well as my DIY after-sun spray or laundry spot remover).
How to Make Homemade Air Fresheners: 3 Easy Steps:
- Gather the materials and ingredients. Use one of the recipes below as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to mix-and-match essential oils depending on what you have in your stash.
- Combine all of the ingredients. I like to add them right into my sprayer (usually with a funnel to decrease spills) to keep things easy.
- Shake well and spray! Since the essential oils tend to float on top of the water, always shake your sprayer bottle before spraying in your home. Natural homemade air freshener sprays won’t linger in your home as long as commercial chemical-sprays, but I personally don’t mind spraying a bit more often if it means I’m avoiding the toxins.
10 Homemade Air Freshener Recipes
1. Citrus Mint Air Freshener Spray
You can’t beat the combination of citrus and mint to give your home a crisp, invigorating feel.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 10 drops wild orange essential oil
- 8 drops peppermint essential oil
2. Sweet Lavender Air Freshener Spray
This gentle, calming spray is perfect for spritzing in the bedrooms before you tuck your kids in for the night.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops chamomile essential oil
3. Summer Citrus Air Freshener Spray
Light and airy, I love spraying this blend during spring cleaning.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 5 drops wild orange essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops lime essential oil
- 5 drops grapefruit essential oil
4. Cozy Holiday Air Freshener Spray
Warm, spicy, and comforting, this blend is all-things holiday rolled into one.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract
- 6 drops wild orange essential oil
- 5 drops cassia or cinnamon essential oil
- 5 drops clove essential oil
5. Flower Garden Air Freshener Spray
Floral, fruity, and fresh!
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops geranium essential oil
- 4 drops grapefruit essential oil
6. Happy Homestead Air Freshener Spray
My go-to blend for when company’s coming over and I want a welcome scent as they walk through the door.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops rosemary essential oil
7. Deodorizing Air Freshener Spray
If you have indoor pets, you’ll appreciate the air-cleansing properties of this simple spray!
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 4 drops tea tree essential oil
- 8 drops lemon essential oil
- 6 drops eucalyptus essential oil
8. Spicy Chai Air Freshener Spray
A cozy aroma that will make you think of sipping your favorite cup of tea by the fireplace on a chilly night.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract
- 4 drops cardamom essential oil
- 3 drops cassia essential oil
- 3 drops clove essential oil
- 2 drops ginger essential oil
9. Walking in the Woods Air Freshener Spray
A woodsy blend that is steadying and grounding for those chaotic days.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 7 drops white fir essential oil
- 6 drops cedar wood essential oil
- 5 drops frankincense essential oil
10. Get Focused Air Freshener Spray
This is my go-to blend when I’m working in my office or we’re doing homeschool and need help staying on task.
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vodka, rubbing alcohol, or real vanilla extract
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops rosemary essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
Notes:
- I am a stickler for quality essential oils. The cheapie ones at the health food store just won’t cut it for me. You can read more about the brand I’ve used for 3+ years here, or find out how to purchase them for yourself.

- Can you store these air fresheners in a plastic bottle? I do. At least sometimes. Because some essential oils have the tendency to break down plastic, if I am going to consume a blend, I always, always keep it in a glass container. However, since I won’t be drinking any of these mixes, I don’t have a problem sticking them in a plastic spray bottle if I’m running low on my glass spritzers.

This won’t leave oil spots around my house will it? I want to try this but I don’t want to potentially ruin my furniture or carpet
I’ve never had an issue with oil spots– essential oils are different that fatty oils and as long as the essential oil isn’t “cut” with a vegetable-type oil, they should not leave spots when combined with water.
I am also wondering about the oil spot, but as you said you havent faced any issue yet, it gives some confidence to me. BTW, if I dont use alcohol or vanilla extract, will it reduce the effectiveness?

I’m not understanding why you would use tap water in your non toxic supplies when tap water will make your supplies toxic ? not sure how long you’ve been making your own supplies but you should have known to always use distilled water. I don’t even give my cat tap water bc it’s not good for them.
As far as I know they are not harmful to carpet or fabrics. Only the dark colored ones may be. Blue etc. I have used them for years. I spray my carpets, rugs, air, floors & shoes etc.

Can you apply these oils to a product? I’m trying to make a cheap air freshener for my car. I already have the product made, so I was wondering if it can be spread on the product and sealed. How long will it last? I’m thinking of trying the wood one.
I have been using them liquid air fresheners that have small sticks in and the air freshener travels up the sticks and fragrances the home.

Amazon has a great selection of the bottles your going to need, I use the blue tinted glass bottles bc you should always use tinted glass with essential oils. Plus never use tap water bc of the chemicals that are in our water.
Why do you use glass bottles over plastic please?
Essential oils are strong, and there is always a worry that they can leach through plastic materials over time. Glass is a better product for both essential oils and anything you want to make for your household as it will not leach/melt.
If you add a t of epson salts to the bottle, the oils will suspend better and not just stick to the sides. I keep saying I am going to make some of these. I will add it to mu list this week.

Im looking online for spray bottles and i came across aluminum ones at specialty bottle.com; think they would work as well as the glass or should i stick w glass; my concern is it falling off of the toilet and/or one of the kids breaking it. Thanks! Cant wait to try these!!

You can also add just a touch of liquid vegetable glycerin to the bottle to help mix the oils with the water.

how long would you say the shelf life is? if it isnt long, do you think adding a all natural preservative would help?
I inherited my grandmother’s essential oil collection when she died (I went looking for it in her cabinet- she had always made homemade sachets and potpourris with them). Most of them are still at full strength, easily identifiable by scent alone. I’d say the tangerine and maybe the spearmint are weakest, but def. identifiable.
Oh- she died in 1996, and I know she had mpst of them for YEARS (think depression mentality- stocked up on and saved EVERYTHING) before that too…so for *fragrance* purposes, I’m saying they’re fine- I can’t say without lab testing if all the other properties are still present…
Coolest thing is I can open some of them and feel really close to her still. Priceless.

There are no labeling requirements in the EO industry, so companies will do all kinds of shady stuff to cut costs, including cutting the EOs with cheaper oils or diluting them. Check out Essential Oil University on Facebook– he’s done some interesting research on the cheaper bargain oils– they are NOT what they say they are.

I have purchased my essential oils from my local health food store and they work just fine. So far, I have made 3 bottles of peppermint foot spray and 3 bottles of bug spray. My next project is to make room sprays. My sprays work great and smell wonderful. In my personal opinion, purchase what you feel is going to rock your world 🙂 I am going to continue to get my oils at my health food store.
I also use essential oils I get from the health foods store, or from amazon, based on high ratings. I have found all of them to be just fine. I have made the air freshener, DIY bathroom spray for your body to replace wipes, disinfectant foaming hand soap, body wash, granite counter cleaner spray and trash can disinfectant spray. I have both glass and plastic bottles and they both work well . For the air freshener I added 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin and the oils and waters mix very well. I did try one teaspoon of epsom salts in the body wash and it ” lumped up” and I felt it was not optimal. I just left it out of the next batch. My two fails were shampoo, and glass stove top cleaner…could have been my recipes I used for those…thank you for the recipes here, they all sound like they would smell really great.

To deodorize the air, I’d recommend diffusing lemon essential oil or Purify blend.

I’ve just started making room sprays with essential oils. They smell so wonderful compared to what you find in the stores. I just came across an article that says you should always use a preservative when making room spray with water. The water is supposed to allow for the growth of bacteria, so I should be using a preservative in all my blends for added protection. I’m generally using 1 cup distilled water, 1 cup witch hazel, and a variety of essential oils. Is this true? And if so, what do I need?

I’ve just started making room sprays with essential oils. I found out after I mixed everything up that I need an emulsifier to keep the oils from floating on the top. Help! I thought a good shake before every use would be adequate, but I’m hearing different. I’m using equal parts water & witch hazel, and essential oils for fragrance. Is there anything I can still add to the bottles to keep the oils evenly dispersed? I heard that sea salt or epsom salt would work, is this true? I’ve already made about 100 bottles and I would sure hate to have them all ruined!
I usually just shake well, but I’ve also used 1-2 drops of liquid dish soap to help with emulsification. I’ve heard sea salt/epsom works, but haven’t tried it personally.

Thank you so much. I use the spray as “monster spray” for my three year old. We spray the closet, his bed, the bathroom, and all the scary nooks of our house as needed. He feels safe and sound and I get a great smelling house.

I love making my own sprays. I cannot tolerate the fake smells it gives me a head ache and puts me in a bad mood… I use food grade emulsifier and always use a glass bottle because I spray it on myself lol… really i do… my fav is sweet orange and lavender, i spray that on my pillow.

How long does it generally last? If I spray on carpeted areas it only seems to last a day or so. I was hoping to make a version for my car and wanted to try to make it last a week ideally.

I used recommended amounts of oils- water- and rubbing alcohol.
These type of sprays usually don’t last super long, unfortunately. For longer-lasting scents for rooms, I recommend using essential oils plus a diffuser.
For the car…I’ve made my own air vent fresheners. Some ribbon, lil pom poms (I found some itty bitty felted wool balls on amazon) some clips and a hot glue gun. Drops of essential oils straight on the balls. Works great. I need to redo mine actually.
I made your recipe for air freshener spray but there is no aroma in the room. I think it is because the essential oils are not strong. Could you recommend some good brands? Hello, can you use pink alcohol instead of rubbing alcohol? Or does the smell overpower the oils?
Otherwise, what alternatives are there? I can never get the essential oil smell to linger, and end up spending a loaf using too much.

You shouldn’t use rubbing alcohol because a long-term inhalation can damage the central nervous system!
I think vodka is a better choice, if you have to make your own air fresheners.

Hi ! I used the right amount of oils drops and Water and alchool, but when i came back in thé bathroom ans almost fell on the Floor cause IT was slippery. When i try to spray over the bathroom counter IT was oily after so i assume m’y Floor was slippery because if the spray … Any suggestions or else? M’y bottles are 4oz and i Do shake IT well before spraying ?!

Isn’t tea tree oil a super NO NO for pets in the house? And a few others listed I know are if you own rabbits 🙁 unfortunately we own quite a few rabbits and these furry creatures will die at the drop of a hat or other fun things like you can induce labor in them with lavender essential oil ? I love me some essential oils but the after effects on our home anyway are tricky and sometimes deadly so I have to be super careful.
I’m so glad someone else thinks about their pets. The minute I saw the tee tree in the recipe I thought about how is bad for dogs. There’s a few essential oils that aren’t good for them.

I think it doesn’t bring out the smell of the oils. It only smells like rubbing alcohol. Why?
I use 99% isopropyl alcohol in mine….
The scent goes away when it dries.

Amazon has a great selection of the bottles your going to need, I use the blue tinted glass bottles bc you should always use tinted glass with essential oils. Plus never use tap water bc of the chemicals that are in our water.
